Quite interesting information about your wood furniture
Quite interesting information about your wood furniture:
Air and sunlight, over time, will fade or change the colour of natural wood.
Wood naturally expands and contracts however fluctuating temperature and humidity levels may cause this natural occurrence to be more extreme.
Traditionally a small wedge or shim is used to level out furniture that is not sitting quite square.
Knots, sapwood and uneven colouration are all naturally occurring properties of real wood.
Tips to keep your wood furniture beautiful:
Regular dusting with a lint free duster (good quality cotton is best) and the occasional polish using good quality petro-chemical free polish for long term care.
1. Keep wood furniture dry – use coasters or placemats for glasses, jugs or vases. If wood is damp or wet for any length of time the finish can be damaged and the wood may actually warp. Clean up any spills immediately using a blotting action as opposed to a wiping action. If spills are left to dry you may be left with a permanent stain.
2. Never put anything hot directly on to your furniture – use coasters, placemats or heat proof pads under anything hot – an ordinary table cloth may not be sufficient. Heat marks are difficult to remove and may need professional restoration.
3. Furniture exposed to direct sunlight will fade or change colour – try to rotate any items on the surface of any pieces to keep natural fade even. Make sure table leaves get the same exposure as your table. On painted furniture the effect of the sun may cause any knots to bleed.
4. Avoid extreme changes of temperature by arranging furniture away from radiators and air conditioning units – these can cause drying out and movement of wood outside of normal parameters. Under floor heating, if too warm, will the same effect as putting your furniture near radiators.
5. Never use nail varnish or nail varnish remover near wood as, if spilt, it will strip the finish down to the wood and leave a stain.
6. Try not to use covers on your furniture that have plastic, rubber or vinyl backing as they may have chemicals in them that can react with the finish on the wood and damage it.
7. The naturally occurring movement in wood may cause bed fittings to loosen – if this happens they are easily tightened.
